Western Whale Research established an ongoing long-term Citizen Science whale monitoring program at Pt. Piquet in Geographe Bay in 2004. Trained citizen scientists record whales they sight from the look-out as they pass within close proximity to land. This research allows for long-term evaluation of changes in relative abundance of humpback, blue, southern right, and minke whales sighted at this location, as well as potential links to climatic and biotic conditions.
School excursions are regularly undertaken at Pt. Piquet, to give the next generation insight into what it’s like monitoring whales as part of a conservation-based science program.
