SouWEST employs a range of research methods. Some of these methods include theodolite tracking, photo-identification (photo-ID) and photogrammetry. We use a theodolite to track whale movements in the study areas, recording numbers of whales, whale behaviours and group compositions for each sighting. These data are incorporated with simultaneous recordings of whale vocalisations from a hydrophone mounted in the bay. We take pictures and video using cameras and drones of blue, southern right, and humpback whales occupying the area, allowing us to use photo-ID to recognize individual animals and photogrammetry to to measure whales and assess their condition.
